Orientation Of The "281" Creek Idaho Star Garnet
We have learned that from this deposit the best stars are cut from the inside outward. This because the silk is concentrated about the core of the crystal. Fig.1. (This does not apply to all star garnets.)

Do little grinding in the silk, only enough to shape the stone. (Silk is the star portion of the garnet.)  Cut the crown 90 degrees to outside crystal faces. Fig.2. Remembering that the maximum size stone with best star would be cut from area 90 degrees to crystal face and through center of crystal.

If the piece does not show a full dodecahedron face (diamond shape) cut at approximately 90 degrees to portion of face showing fig. 3.  Then only slight grinding on base of cab will be required to center star, Fig.4.

Note: Stone must be polished or semi-polished to see the star clearly and only then should the star be oriented.  Occasionally a four ray star will be on top of cab but by tilting stone and turning, may show the six ray, thus the stone will have to be re-orientated and shaped.

Note: We cannot guarantee star brightness, fracture-free, or inclusions-free material, only that it has a star.
